In a must win game for the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team, a four-goal outburst in the second half pushed them past visiting New Paltz 5-1. The victory, coupled with losses by both Fredonia and Buffalo State, secured the No. 5 seed for the SUNYAC tournament. The Red Dragons will go on the road for a quarterfinal match next Saturday versus Plattsburgh.
Â
Leading the attack today for Oneonta (8-8, 4-5 SUNYAC) was senior Jessica Downin who finished with a pair of goals and one assist. Classmates
Kelsie Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and
Nicole Donadio (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) each added one goal while Moinzadeh tacked on an assist.
Â
Tied 1-1 at the break, Downin got the barrage going with a goal just 48 seconds into the second half. She got her head on a crossing pass from Moinzadeh just outside the box to the right of the goal. Moinzadeh collected the ball after a shot by Kornfeld was saved before deflecting out to the wing.
Â
Seven minutes later, it was Moinzadeh that was in the right place to charge on a pass from outside the box by senior
Seaver Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue). Lipshie's pass skipped by the New Paltz defense before Moinzadeh beat the keeper to the loose ball to put in over the line.
Â
Downin's second goal came on a failed clearing attempt by New Paltz shooting from about 20 yards out over the keeper's head.
Â
The final tally of the match came on a corner kick when Downin served a ball to the front of the goal where Donadio got her head on it to put it past the keeper.
Â
Junior
Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place) got things started for the Red Dragons in the 16
th minute when she was in place to finish off a ball that came over the top of the defense from freshman
Grace Syron (East Marion/Greenport). Syron got her head on a high ball and popped it over the defense and keeper where Kornfeld was able to get behind to finish the play.
Â
New Paltz tied the game in the 29
th minute on a goal from close by Erika McCue. McCue was able to control a pass into the goal area by Danielle Angyal before sliding it past
Jolene Krom (Sidney/Sidney).
Â
The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks 16-3 including 11-1 in the second half. Krom made a pair of saves in picking up her fifth win of the season.
Â
Oneonta will finish the regular season at Wilkes University this Tuesday beginning at 7pm.
