The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team competed this weekend at the 22
nd annual Mayor's Cup Tournament hosted by both Oneonta and Hartwick. The Red Dragons managed only a tie for its two-day effort, which came yesterday against Eastern Connecticut State 0-0. Today, Oneonta dominated statistically, but came out on the short end of a 2-1 score to Susquehanna, who was the overall team champion after having also defeated Hartwick yesterday.
Â
All the goals in today's game came in the first half of play. Oneonta (0-3-1) outshot Susquehanna (4-0-1) 14-2 in the opening half, but the River Hawks managed to squeeze its two shots into the goal.
Â
Susquehanna took the early lead in the fourth minute of play on a goal by Alyssa Bolger. The goal came off a restart when a foul was called on Oneonta out by the left sideline. Bolger got her head on a service into the goal area by Emily Lefkowitz, which trickled past Oneonta keeper
Melissa Muller (Holbrook/Sachem North).
Â
Oneonta continued to pressure the Susquehanna defense earning three corner kicks in the first half. It was on the third corner that Oneonta finally cashed in when sophomore
Abby Ousouljoglou (Bridgewater/Bridgewater Raritan Regional) tied the game. Ousouljoglou had just entered the game and was able to get her head on the service from the corner by junior
Seaver Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue).
Â
In the 41
st minute Susquehanna capitalized on a failed clear by the Red Dragons. Kathryn Perlowitz carried the ball back into the box and sent in a crossing pass which was redirected by Geena Ragozine into the back of the goal.
Â
The two teams battled evenly in the second half with neither squad being able to sustain a consistent attack.
Â
Ousouljoglou along with senior
Amanda Roney (Schoharie/Middleburgh) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Â
Oneonta will travel to Hamilton College for its next match, which is this coming Wednesday at 4pm. The Red Dragons return home next Saturday for a match versus Vassar College beginning at 2pm.
