Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse tripped up by Potsdam in overtime

Junior attackman Eric Soderquist took a pass from senior Casey Boulio and quickly deposited a shot into the back of the goal to give the visiting SUNY Potsdam Bears an 11-10 overtime victory today against SUNY Oneonta in SUNYAC men's lacrosse action.  The goal came just 24 seconds into the first sudden-victory period after Potsdam (3-4, 1-1 SUNYAC) won the faceoff.

Oneonta (3-7, 0-2 SUNYAC) held a 10-9 lead late in the fourth period before Buolio tied the score with his third goal of the game with 1:39 remaining in regulation.

The Red Dragons controlled the ensuing faceoff and quickly called a timeout.  After nearly one minute, Oneonta called another timeout still on offense.  The Red Dragons turned the ball over with 17 seconds left, but got the ball back when Potsdam failed to clear the ball.  Junior Andrew Sehres (Port Jefferson Station/Port Jefferson Station) picked up the loose ball and made a pass to classmate Ryan Curley (Manorille/Eastport South Manor) who released a shot right before the final horn that was saved by Bears' goalie Jack Bezek forcing the extra period of play.

The two teams traded goals for most of the entire game today.  The largest lead for either team was 6-4 by Potsdam midway through the third period.  There was a total of nine ties and four lead changes, the final one coming at the end of the contest.

Oneonta grabbed its first lead of the game early in the fourth period when Curley scored unassisted at 13:53.  Potsdam bounced back with a pair of goals to take the lead back before the Red Dragons notched back-to-back goals to take the lead once again at 9-8 with 8:31 remaining in the game.

Boulio tied the game at nine apiece at 4:26 before junior Alec Solomito (Holtsville/Sachem East) posted his second goal of the game to put Oneonta ahead 10-9.

Curley led Oneonta today with three goals while Solomito and sophomore Jimmy Kickel (South Setauket/Ward Melville) each had two goals.

Soderquist joined Boulio with three goals for Potsdam while Nick Orsini and Berkley Stone each scored a pair.

Bezek finished the game with 11 saves in goal while Oneonta goalie Andrew Helfman (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) made 10 saves.

Oneonta will be home again this coming Wednesday when they face Plattsburgh in another SUNYAC contest beginning at 4pm on Red Dragon Field.
