The SUNY Oneonta softball team came away with an even weekend on the road with a pair of wins against Oswego and a couple of losses to rival Cortland. After being swept by Cortland yesterday, Oneonta (21-11, 9-7 SUNYAC) bounced back today versus Oswego with a pair of 5-1 victories.
Â
The highlight of the Cortland doubleheader yesterday was senior
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) becoming the all-time leader in runs batted in breaking the mark of 108 set by Hall of Famer Alayna Isby back in 2001. O'Gorman set the mark with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning of game 2 against Cortland. O'Gorman added two more RBIs today and now has 111. The home run was also the 15
th of her career.
Â
In today's twin bill, seniors
Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) and
Amanda Graziano (Riverhead/Riverhead) both pitched solidly each recording complete game victories. DeAngelis allowed five hits and no earned runs and struck out six in her win while Graziano was nearly a carbon copy striking out four.
Â
In game 1, the score was tied 1-1 before the Red Dragons plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull away from the Lakers. Senior
Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) led off the inning with a single through the right side and then was lifted for pinch runner
Alyssa Garrison (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). Garrison was put out on a force out for the second out of the inning, which put freshman
Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central/Delmar) on first via the fielder's choice. Corbett came around to score when classmate
Kate Jencarelli (Roseland, NJ/West Essex ) hit a double to left center.
Â
Oneonta then loaded the bases where O'Gorman singled through the left side to bring home Jencarelli and
Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley), who had a pinch-hit single.
Â
The Red Dragons tacked on one final run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Corbett.
Â
In game 2, Oneonta didn't waste any time in grabbing a lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. With O'Gorman at third and sophomore
Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) at second with two outs, Cuevas singled to right center to drive the two runs in.
Â
After a single run by Oswego (13-15, 9-5 SUNYAC) cut the lead in half, Oneonta added a pair of runs in the fourth inning to go up 4-1. The big hit in the inning was a pinch-hit double by Sabatino that knocked in junior
Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) and Corbett.
Â
McFall was responsible for the Red Dragons' final run in the sixth inning when she cleared the fence with a solo shot to lead off the inning.
Â
In yesterday's doubleheader at Cortland, Oneonta did collect 18 hits over the two games, but stranded 16 base-runners in 4-1 and 4-3 losses. Del Genio had three hits and senior
Killeen Martin (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) had two hits in game 1 while Del Genio and classmate
Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) each had a pair of hits in game 2.
Â
Oneonta will play its final non-conference doubleheader this Wednesday at Ramapo.
