Softball settles for split with Brockport

Freshman Kate Jencarelli collects six hits on the day

The SUNY Oneonta softball team had to settle for a split of its SUNYAC doubleheader today with Brockport.  Playing at home for the first time this season, the Red Dragons pounded the Golden Eagles in the opener 14-4 while dropping the second game 8-6.

Freshman Kate Jencarelli (Roseland, NJ/West Essex ) had a big day at the plate for Oneonta (17-7, 5-5 SUNYAC) with a pair of three-hit games.  Senior Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) picked up her seventh win of the season in game 1.

Game 1 – Oneonta 14, Brockport 4 (5 innings)
The opening inning of today's first game took 50 minutes to completed, as the two teams combined for 13 runs.  Brockport opened with a three-spot to grab the lead before Oneonta batted around to score 10 runs on 11 hits.  In the inning, seniors Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston) and Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) each had two-run doubles.

Brockport (13-11, 3-5 SUNYAC) loaded the bases in the first and the three runs were scored via a walk and two hit batters.

The Golden Eagles added a single run in the top of the second on a single to right center by Jessica Koneski.

The Red Dragons countered in the home half of the second with a pair of runs.  Jencarelli and senior Killeen Martin (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) both singled to give Oneonta runners at the corners for senior Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) who tripled to right field to score both runners.

The final two runs for Oneonta came in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) doubled home Martin, who then scored on a triple by classmate Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford).

After the first inning, DeAngelis settled down and allowed only three more hits.  She finished the game with five strikeouts.

Game 2 – Brockport 8, Oneonta 6
Oneonta took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Cuevas and Jencarelli before the Golden Eagles got one back in their half of the second on an RBI single by Shelby Perry.

The Red Dragons added a pair of runs in the second inning when O'Gorman scored on a fielding error and Ruiz scored on another Triple by Del Genio.

Brockport put together a two-out rally in the top of the third inning that led to three runs to tie the score at 4-4.  Lindsay Wachna doubled home Karleigh Eaton for the first run.  Wachna then scored on a single by Koneski.  The inning was prolonged when Allison Missavage reached on a throwing error by the catcher after striking out.  Morgan Flamholtz came through with a single that scored Mikelle Deck, who ran for Koneski.
