A third quarter that saw SUNY Oneonta outscore host Oswego, 16-9, proved to be the difference in an otherwise statistically even game allowed the Red Dragons to defeat the Lakers 46-38.  The win was the second straight for Oneonta and pushed its record to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC while the loss for Oswego dropped them to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
 
After a layup by Courtney Emeele tied the score at 22 apiece, Oneonta created some breathing room with an 11-1 spurt that gave them a 10-point lead midway through the third period.  Sophomore Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) and junior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) led the burst with five points and four points respectively.
 
The Lakers hit back-to-back threes to get back to within four points, but Oneonta closed the quarter with five unanswered capped with a three-pointer by freshman Maya Bernsley (Monroe/Monroe Woodbury).  The Red Dragons took a 38-29 lead into the final period.
 
Oswego scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to get to within four points once again, but Oneonta countered with an 8-1 run that put the game out of reach for the Lakers with 31 seconds remaining in the game.
 
The Red Dragons struggled early falling behind 11-4 through the first seven minutes of the opening period.  Oneonta then caught fire and got a boost off the bench from sophomore Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka), tying the score at 13 apiece at the end of the first quarter.  Hayes scored four of her seven points in the final three minutes and led the reserves tonight.
 
Junior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) was the high scorer for Oneonta tonight with 10 points to go with seven rebounds.  She also had three assists, two steals and a block.
 
Oneonta will travel to defending SUNYAC champion New Paltz this Saturday for its final conference game of the semester beginning at 1pm.
