GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team's bid to upset top-seeded SUNY Geneseo today in the semifinals of the 2017 SUNYAC tournament fell short with a 2-1 loss. Sophomore forward Domenica Piccoli scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining. The Red Dragons had entered the match riding a seven-game win streak, but unfortunately the loss for Oneonta will end its season at 8-10-1 overall.
Geneseo (15-1-2) struck first in the 34th minute. Jennifer Moran took control of a loose ball at the top-left corner of the 18-yard box and created enough space to loop a chip shot inside the top corner of the right post.
The Red Dragons evened the count 13 seconds later when senior
Amanda Roney (Schoharie/Middleburgh) took the ball on the re-start and dribbled down the middle of the field through numerous defenders toward the Geneseo net. A Knights' defender finally knocked the ball off Roney's foot, but freshman
Micaela Honsinger (New Hartford/New Hartford) was there to score on an 18-yard shot into the left corner of the Geneseo goal.
The score remained tied until the final five minutes when Piccoli gave the Knights the lead. First-year Ellie Gregory crossed a dangerous ball into the Oneonta goal-mouth where the Red Dragons attempted a clear, but the ball fell to Piccoli who poked it in to give Geneseo a 2-1 advantage with 4:39 to play.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Janiszewski made eight saves to preserve the victory. Oneonta keeper
Melissa Muller (Holbrook/Sachem North) came up with four saves in her final collegiate game.
