The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team completely dominated the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Wildcats last night picking up a 3-0 victory on the road. The win for the Red Dragons was its third straight heading into its final weekend of SUNYAC play with playoff implications.
Oneonta (4-9-1) left no doubt with a pair of early goals that set the tone for the match. Senior
Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) converted a pass from classmate
Rachel Berk (Eastchester/Eastchester) in the sixth minute to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead. Berk created the opportunity with a shot that was saved before Rolston collected the rebound and slid it by the keeper.
A little over one minute later, Berk crossed a pass into the box that was finished off with a header by junior
Jess Downin (Franklin/Franklin Central) to put Oneonta up by a pair.
Oneonta's final goal came late in the game by sophomore
Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place) off an assist by
Nicole Donadio (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue).
Oneonta finished the match outshooting the Wildcats 28-2. They also earned 10 corner kicks to only two for SUNY Poly.
Senior
Melissa Muller (Holbrook/Sachem North) didn't have to make a save in picking up her second win of the season.
The Red Dragons will finally return home this weekend after one month on the road to face Buffalo State and Fredonia to close out its SUNYAC schedule. The Red Dragons are in seventh place in the SUNYAC entering this weekend, but are only one point out of the sixth and final playoff spot.
Oneonta plays Buffalo State Friday afternoon at 3pm and will face Fredonia on Saturday at 1pm.
