The SUNY Oneonta softball team went hit-for-hit with rival Cortland today, but came out on the short end of a 9-7 score, which eliminated them from the SUNYAC tournament on Day 2. The two teams combined for 25 hits in the game including 14 by Oneonta (22-17).
Â
Cortland (33-9) scored the first runs of the game in the second inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Senior Erin Wolstenholme doubled in Andrea Schoonmaker with the first run and Wolstenholme came around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Â
Oneonta came back in the top of the third and cut Cortland's lead in half. Sophomore
Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) got things started with a single to center field before advancing to second on a ground out by freshman
Dana DelGenio (New Hartford/New Hartford). Lefebvre went to third on a passed ball before finally scoring on back-to-back infield singles to the pitcher.
Â
Cortland added a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Kaleigh Churchill that brought home Jamie Bucci who was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to third on a double by Diane Cork.
Â
Both teams pushed across a single run in the fourth inning. Oneonta took advantage of a Cortland error, but left the bases loaded in the top of the inning. Rosie Phillips doubled in Wolstenholme for Cortland's run in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Oneonta took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Once again, Oneonta capitalized on Cortland miscues that prolonged the inning, which allowed Oneonta to gain the lead. The big hit in the inning was a two-out single by DelGenio that drove in two runs.
Â
Cortland then matched Oneonta with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back at 7-5. The hosts loaded the bases due to three straight walks by junior
Amanda Graziano (Riverhead/Riverhead), who relieved starter Sabrina D'Angelis in the fourth. A single by pinch-hitter Skyler Hoyt drove in a pair of runs, but a throwing error by the second baseman allowed a third run to score.
Â
Oneonta showed resiliency in the top of the sixth, as they came back to knot the score at seven apiece. This time it was junior
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) that came through, as she benefitted from a dropped foul ball by the right fielder, to rip a double to left field that scored
Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) and
Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke).
Â
Cork led off the home half of the sixth inning with a home run over the fence in left center to put Cortland back ahead 8-7. Cortland added an insurance run on an RBI single by Schoonmaker with two outs.
Â
Lefebvre led off the seventh with a sharp single to left field, but was erased by a 6-3 double play.Â
Killeen Martin (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) then lined out to third base to end the game.
