Softball sweeps Oswego in walk off fashion

Cuevas cracks 1st home run of the season to lead Red Dragons

SUNY Oneonta junior Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) certainly picked a perfect time to crack her first home run of the season today, as the Red Dragons walked off with a 7-6 victory in the second game of a SUNYAC doubleheader with Oswego.  The win capped a sweep of the Lakers, as Oneonta (22-15, 11-7 SUNYAC) secured the No. 4 seed for the upcoming conference tournament beginning this Thursday at SUNY Cortland.  Oneonta's opening opponent will be SUNY Geneseo at 1pm.

Cuevas' heroics came with one out in the bottom of the seventh of a 6-6 game.  She deposited a 0-1 pitch from Oswego freshman Brittney Sears over the left field fence.

Oneonta actually had to come-from-behind in game 2, as Oswego (14-17, 7-11 SUNYAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.  Back-to-back doubles in the first inning by Tori Trovato and Jacquie Porreca gave the Lakers its first run of the game.  In the top of the second, Oswego benefitted from three Oneonta errors to put another five runs on the scoreboard.  A pinch hit single by Melanie Klauser drove in a pair while a triple by Ashley Lyman later in the inning brought home two more runners.

The Red Dragons started to chip away at the Laker lead with a pair of runs in the home half of the third inning.  Freshman Dana DelGenio (New Hartford/New Hartford) hit a one-out single and went to third on a single by classmate Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke).  Senior Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) brought DelGenio home with an RBI single.  Whittam scored the second run on a Cuevas infield single.

Oneonta still trailed entering the bottom of the sixth before tying the game with four runs.  The first big blow of the inning was a triple to left center by sophomore Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) that drove in Cuevas, who led off the inning with a walk.  McFall finally scored on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley).

The biggest blow of the inning came off of DelGenio's bat, as she tied the game with a two-out dinger over the centerfield fence that brought Sabatino home ahead of her.

Junior Sabrina D'Angelis threw 5-1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Amanda Graziano (Riverhead/Riverhead) and picked up her 10th win of the season.  D'Angelis went the distance in game 1 to earn that win as well, which was another come-from-behind victory ending 4-2 in favor of the hosts.

Cuevas, DelGenio, Sabatino and Ruiz all had two hits in game 2 to pace the offense.

In the opener, Oswego pushed across single runs in the second and third innings and carried its 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.  Melissa Mulvaney hit a two-out double to drive in Katie Heselden to account for the Lakers run in the second.  Lyman doubled in Trovato for its lone run of the third.  Trovato finished game 1 with three hits to lead Oswego.

Oneonta's first two runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth.  Cuevas knocked in the first run and Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) drove in the tying run with two outs.

In the sixth, DelGenio reached on an infield single and came around to score the go ahead run on a double to deep right field by Sabatino.  On the play, Sabatino was able to get to third base when the right fielder bobbled the ball while trying to pick it up.  Lefebvre then reached on an infield single with two outs that brought in Sabatino with the unearned run.

In the seventh, Oswego had runners in scoring position with two outs, but D'Angelis got Porreca to ground out to Cuevas to end the game.

Whittam, McFall, O'Gorman and Sabatino all collected two hits in the first game.  Both of Sabatino's hits were for extra bases.
