Red Dragon bats pound Fredonia in sweep

The SUNY Oneonta softball team combined for 21 runs and 24 hits in sweeping the visiting Blue Devils of Fredonia today on Red Dragon Softball field.  The Red Dragons hammered Fredonia pitching while taking advantage of a combined six errors in the twin bill to run its record to 13-10 overall and 4-2 in the SUNYAC.
 
Game 1, Oneonta 7-1
Senior Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) starting things off in the bottom of the first inning with a bunt single to third base.  A wild pitch and a walk to Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) put runners at the corners.  Whittam came into score on an errand throw down to second base on a steal attempt by Lefebvre.  Lefebvre went to third on a ground out by Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and then scored on the second wild pitch of the inning.
 
Fredonia got one run back in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by junior Erin Mushtare that scored Sarah Cuillo.  Cuillo hit a one-out single and went to third on a double by Cassidy Herman.
 
Junior Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to knock in Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington), who singled to start the inning for the Red Dragons.
 
Oneonta put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Blue Devils committed a pair of errors in the inning, as Oneonta took advantage of the miscues.  Freshman Alyssa Garrison (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) had an RBI double in the inning.
 
Junior Sabrina D'Angelis went the distance allowing nine hits and recording four strikeouts.
 
Game 2, Oneonta 14-6 (6 innings)
Oneonta pounded the Fredonia pitching staff en route to the six inning victory.  Cuevas and freshman Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) each had three hits to lead the attack.  Whittam, O'Gorman and Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston) each collected two hits.
 
Lefebvre and O'Gorman each had three runs batted in while Whittam, Cuevas and Brocco each drove in a pair.
 
After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, the Red Dragons stormed back with five runs in the next two innings to grab a 5-3 lead.
 
The Blue Devils came back to tie the score in the fourth inning, as they chased starter Amanda Graziano (Riverhead/Riverhead) from the game giving way to freshman Kate Wood (Suffern/Suffern).  Oneonta committed three errors in the inning that allowed Fredonia to have extra outs, which they capitalized on.
 
The Red Dragons seized control of the game with four runs in each of the next two innings before ending the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs.
 
Lefebvre drove in the first two runs of the fourth inning with a single scoring Whittam and Garrison.  Later in the inning, Brocco tripled down the right field line to drive in McFall and O'Gorman.
 
In the fifth inning, O'Gorman drove in a pair with the bases loaded.  McFall and Cuevas collected an RBI each.
 
Cuevas drove in the winning run in the sixth inning with a single to short right field, which scored O'Gorman from third base.
 
Wood earned her fourth win of the season allowing no runs in 2-2/3 innings of relief.
 
Oneonta travels to play Potsdam tomorrow for its makeup of a doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
