Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball drops pair to end regular season

Oneonta to face rival Cortland in SUNYAC quarterfinals

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team stumbled on the road this weekend to end the regular season.  The Red Dragons dropped a pair of road games to Fredonia last night and Buffalo State this afternoon to finish 16-9 overall and 12-6 in the SUNYAC.  Oneonta, which had clinched its spot in the conference tournament nearly two weeks ago, has earned the No. 5 seed and will travel to play rival Cortland on Tuesday night for a quarterfinal contest.  The winner will travel to face host and top-seeded New Paltz on Friday night in the semifinals.  The championship game is scheduled for next Saturday at 4pm.

Oneonta will be making its 25th appearance overall and 23rd consecutive in the SUNYAC tournament.  The last time Oneonta met Cortland was in the quarterfinals of the 2014 tournament with Cortland winning 67-58.  The two teams split this season, both winning on their own home courts.

Senior Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) did all she could to lead Oneonta to a victory today against Buffalo State, but poor shooting in the second half and from the free throw line cost the Red Dragons in a 63-62 loss in overtime.  Price scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the contest.

Price's 12 boards pushed her past 700 career rebounds while becoming only the second women's player all-time to surpass this mark.  She also moved into fifth on the all-time scoring list with her 1,059 points.

Oneonta led today's game by seven points with less than five minutes remaining, but the Bengals scored nine unanswered to grab a 54-52 lead with 16 seconds left on the clock.  Sophomore Samantha Lisikatos (Cold Spring/Haldane) made a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Buffalo built a five point lead with 2:22 remaining.  A pair of free throws by Price tied the game at 60 apiece.

Trailing by two points with two seconds left, Price went to the line to shoot a pair, but only made one and the game ended on the rebound.

Buffalo State had four players in double figures and outscored Oneonta, 32-16, in the paint today.

In last night's game, Oneonta led 45-44 entering the fourth quarter, but couldn't hold off a charging Fredonia squad in a 69-64 loss.  The Blue Devils scored eight unanswered points midway through the quarter gave Fredonia the lead for good.

Junior Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) led Oneonta with 17 points followed by Lisikatos and Price who contributed 13 points and 12 points respectively.
