Ten unanswered points early in the first quarter was all that was needed today, as the visiting Knights of SUNY Geneseo earned a 56-45 SUNYAC victory against host SUNY Oneonta. The win for Geneseo (16-6/11-4 SUNYAC) brought them to within one-half game of Oneonta (16-7/12-4) at the top of the conference standings, as the two teams battle for a bye and a possible host site for the SUNYAC tournament, which begins in two weeks.
Â
After senior
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) three-pointer to open the game for Oneonta, Geneseo scored its 10 unanswered points to grab a 10-3 lead midway through the opening quarter. Senior point guard Dana Cohan hit a couple of jumpers during the spurt.
Â
In the game, Cohan scored 11 points including a three-pointer late in the fourth period to put her over 1,000 career points.
Â
Price led the Red Dragons with 11 points while classmate
Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) added 10 points and a game high 10 rebounds.
Â
Oneonta's last run came late in the third quarter when they scored the last seven points of the period to cut Geneseo's lead back to nine points entering the final quarter. Unfortunately, that would be as close as Oneonta would be for the remainder of the contest.
Â
Joining Cohan with 11 points for Geneseo was Katie Durand and McKenna Brooks.
Â
Oneonta will closeout the regular season next weekend with games at Buffalo State and Fredonia. The Red Dragons will play Buffalo State on Friday night and Fredonia on Saturday afternoon.
