Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball falls to New Paltz on the road

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team fell to New Paltz today on the road 61-48.  Senior Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) led Oneonta (5-4, 2-2 SUNYAC) with 13 points, but New Paltz (5-4, 2-2 SUNYAC) put four players in double figures en route to the conference victory.

The two teams completed the first half the way they started, deadlocked at 25 apiece heading into intermission.  Neither team shot particularly well today, but the Hawks did make seven three-pointers to only four for Oneonta.  The Hawks also made 20-of-24 free throws while the Red Dragons made 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Seven unanswered points to start the third period for the Hawks proved to be the push they needed.    A layup by freshman Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) brought Oneonta to within a bucket at 33-31 with 1:08 remaining in the third period, but the Hawks closed with a 5-2 spurt that carried into the fourth period that turned into a 9-4 run to put them up 42-35 at 8:54.

Seven unanswered points by the Hawks from 4:07 to 3:03 of the period pushed their lead to 14 points, which proved to be too much to overcome for Oneonta who never got any closer than 13 points.

Sophomore Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) had eight points, eight rebounds and a team best five assists today for Oneonta.  Freshman Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) added five points while pulling down a game high 12 rebounds in her first collegiate start.

Oneonta will journey west to California for a pair of games on Dec. 29-30 at Chapman University.  The Red Dragons will face current No. 2 in Division III Amherst on the 29th before playing the hosts on the 30th.
