Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Grinds Out Victory Against Skidmore

For the second straight game, the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team showed poise and determination in pulling out another come-from-behind victory.  Today, a goal by junior Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) in the 84th minute lifted Oneonta to the victory.

The win for Oneonta (7-3-4) extended its current unbeaten streak to six games including four straight wins.  The loss for Skidmore dropped them to 3-6-1 overall.

The Thoroughbreds scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute on a turnover in the box by the Oneonta defense.  Sophomore Courtney Shaw was there to collect the loose ball and, after a dribble to her right, fired a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.  The goal was the first of the season for Shaw.

Eight minutes later, junior Amanda Roney (Schoharie /Middleburgh) tied the game after stealing the ball from a Skidmore defender inside the box.  After taking the ball away, Roney dribbled left, kept the ball on her left foot, and placed a perfect shot into the upper right corner of the goal that deflected off the keeper's hands as she was diving to make the stop.  It was Roney's fifth goal of the season, which ties her for the team lead with classmate Kayla Belush (Earlville/Sherburne-Earlville).

Oneonta kept up the steady pressure for the remainder of the first half, but headed to the intermission tied with Skidmore.

Early on in the second half, Oneonta kept the ball in the attacking third for long stretches of time, but were still unable to get the go-ahead goal.

Oneonta's pressure paid off when Skidmore was whistled for a foul just outside the box on the right flank.  Sophomore Seaver Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) took the restart and sent a ball towards the far post where Rolston redirected it at the back post into the back of the goal.

Emilie Mull (Marcy/Whitesboro) made five saves in goal today for Oneonta while Alyssa Rollins and Deidre Walsh combined to make five stops for the Thoroughbreds.

Oneonta will play its next to last home game this Saturday when they host New Paltz at 1pm.  Saturday is senior day along with being the team's Play 4 the Cure game.  Oneonta is raising money to support breast cancer research.
