Women's basketball routs Oswego to earn weekend split

Reserves lead Red Dragons against Lakers

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team outscored host Oswego, 24-2, in the final quarter to put an exclamation point on an 81-44 victory today in SUNYAC women's action.  Oneonta (12-5/8-2 SUNYAC) bounced back in a big way after falling last night to rival SUNY Cortland 67-55.

Trailing 23-21 at the end of the first quarter, the Red Dragons established control with a 20-point second quarter while holding Oswego (3-14/1-9 SUNYAC) to only nine points.

As has been the case in recent games, the reserves played a major role in the victory today once again.  Oneonta's bench outscored the Lakers' reserves 32-8 led by freshman Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) who scored a season high 16 points in 24 minutes of play.  Senior Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) added 10 points off the bench while junior Brianna Spector (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Dublin) contributed six points.  Frank also grabbed a team high nine rebounds.

Senior Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) was the game's high scorer with 20 points, as she drilled four three-pointers in the contest.

Oswego committed 26 turnovers which led to 27 points for Oneonta.  They also scored 30 points in the paint.

The Red Dragons still trailed Oswego 26-25 early in the second quarter before ripping off nine straight points to seize the momentum of the game.  Frank scored four of the nine points during the spurt.

Oneonta continued to build its lead through the third quarter and took a 15-point into the fourth before putting the game out of reach in the final stanza.

Last night versus Cortland, Price scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but the rival Red Dragons overcame a deficit to win the game in the fourth quarter.  Oneonta took a 43-40 lead into the final quarter, but Cortland outscored Oneonta 27-12 to take the victory.

Cortland outscored Oneonta, 22-8, in the paint and 21-9 from the free throw line, most of which were scored down the stretch when they pulled away.

Oneonta will host New Paltz on Tuesday night in the Dewar Arena beginning at 5:30pm.
