The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team remained unbeaten through the first week of the 2015 season, as today they pulled out a 1-0 victory against St. Joseph's College of Long Island on the final day of the 2015 Oneonta Mayor's Cup Tournament.
Â
The Red Dragons (2-0-1) carried the attack all match long, but had many near misses until finally getting one to go to the back of the goal. Today's hero was sophomore
Kayla Belush (Earlville/Sherburne-Earlville), who scored in the 88
th minute. Belush carried the ball from the left flank into the box before getting a shot off that went inside the left post. The goal for Belush was her second of the year and her second game-winner.
Â
Oneonta outshot the Golden Eagles (0-2-1), 22-4, and earned nine corner kicks while St. Joe's managed only one. The Golden Eagles nearly gained the lead early in the second half, but senior goalkeeper,
Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), came up with a pair of saves to preserve the scoreless tie.
Â
In the 62
nd minute, Murphy came rushing off her line to make a save on a bang-bang play against Kristin Carroll, who had broken in all alone. Two minutes later, Murphy had to make a diving save going to her left on a shot by Emily Fontinha. Murphy finished with three saves in the match.
Â
Oneonta finished second in this year's tournament despite going 2-0. They lost out on goal differential to local rival Hartwick, who went 2-0 as well this weekend.
Â
Senior
Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) was named as the
Tracey Ranieri Defensive MVP for anchoring a defense that posted a pair of shutouts this weekend. Belush, along with classmates
Emily Opalinski (East Amherst /Williamsville East ) and
Paige McDermott (Floral Park/Kellenberg Memorial) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Â
The Red Dragons won't be in action again until next weekend when they will participate in the Adidas Classic hosted by The College of New Jersey. Oneonta will be matched against the hosts on Saturday and will play Kean University on Sunday.
