The SUNY Oneonta baseball team put together a superb team effort today in shutting out visiting Mount St. Mary in its season finale. Senior
Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division) was masterful in recording a complete game, two-hit, shutout in his final collegiate start for the Red Dragons. Classmates
Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue) and
Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham) led the offense for Oneonta in their final games for Oneonta. Cruz had a pair of doubles and drove in one run while Halligan had one hit and scored two runs.
Â
Oneonta scored its first three runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Halligan was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second on a single by sophomore
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal). Halligan came around to score when the pitcher for the Knights airmailed a throw on a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Mullins to get to third and junior
Jack Burns (Endicott/Union Endicott ) to advance to second base.
Â
The next batter was
Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall) and hit a fly ball to right field deep enough for Mullins to score from third. Burns scored on a double by junior
Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central).
Â
Jordan was perfect through the first three innings and didn't surrender a hit until the fourth inning with one out. Jordan threw 86 pitches today and recorded two strikeouts, facing 32 batters.
Â
Oneonta plated a single run in the fifth inning on three consecutive singles by Halligan, Mullins and Burns.
Â
An RBI double by Cruz scored freshman
Dillon Merola (Cornwall/Cornwall) from first base in the seventh inning.
Â
The Red Dragons scored its final three runs in the eighth inning. A pair of RBI doubles by Kerdesky and
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) accounted for the first two runs. The final run of the inning was driven in by freshman
Sam Beaulac (Wynantskill/Averill Park ), who hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that knocked in Franke.
