Baseball drops doubleheader to Fredonia

Freshman Sam Beaulac collects six hits

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team dropped a doubleheader today to Fredonia to complete its SUNYAC schedule for the 2015 season.  The Red Dragons lost the opener, 10-5, and tried to rally late in game two before falling 11-8.

Fredonia (13-17, 8-10 SUNYAC) did most of its damage in game 1 in the first inning when they took advantage of three Oneonta (7-22, 4-14 SUNYAC) errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.  The big blow in the inning was a grand slam by Dan Cecilia, who deposited a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence to give the Blue Devils a 5-0 lead after one-half inning.

The Red Dragons countered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of its own runs to close the gap.  Freshman Sam Beaulac (Wynantskill/Averill Park ) legged out an infield single to start things off and then stole second.  He came into score on an RBI double to left field by senior Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue).  Cruz has been on a tear as of late and collected three more hits in this game.

Cruz then scored on a single by classmate Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham), who finished the game 2-for-3.

Fredonia added a single run in the second inning and tacked on a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to increase its lead to 10-2.  Oneonta put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, but were retired in order in the seventh.

A pair of RBI singles by Beaulac and junior Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall) and an RBI double by Cruz accounted for the Red Dragons' runs in the sixth.

There was plenty of fireworks early in the second game today, as the two teams combined for 15 runs through the first two innings.

An RBI double with two outs by Dan Cecelia gave Fredonia a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the first inning.

Once again Beaulac was the catalyst for the Red Dragons at the top of the order.  He started the game with a single and went to second on a single by classmate Dillon Merola (Cornwall/Cornwall).  They both moved up one base on a balk before scoring on an RBI double by Cruz.  Cruz came around to score on a two-out, RBI double by sophomore Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal).

The Blue Devils posted a six-spot in the top of the second inning to grab an 8-3 lead before Oneonta plated four runs in the home half of the inning to pull within 8-7.

Beaulac recorded an RBI with a double to right center field and Halligan drove in the final two runs of the inning with a double of his own.  Beaulac the first four-hit game of his career in game 2 while driving in a pair of runs.

Fredonia scored two runs in the sixth and added its final run in the top of the ninth inning.

There were two outstanding relief performances in game 2 turned in by Oneonta freshman Christopher DiDomizio (Cortlandt Manor/Lakeland ) and Fredonia senior Ben Senior.  DiDomizio threw six complete innings and allowed four hits and two runs while Senior, who earned his first win of the season, threw 6-2/3 innings allowing five hits and one run.

Oneonta collected 15 hits in game 2 including 10 from the first four batters in the order.  Mullins added three hits in today's second game.

Oneonta will conclude its 2015 season this week with a pair of home games.  Tuesday, the Red Dragons will play Elmira and, on Wednesday, they will play their rescheduled game with Mount St. Mary.  Both games start at 4pm.
