Cortland, NY – The SUNY Oneonta softball team traveled to Cortland for a rematch of last season's SUNYAC Championship Game. Reigning SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week
Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) picked up her 10
th win of the year in a 2-1 victory in game one; the hosts went on to take the nightcap 6-4.

Game 1:Â
After a scoreless first inning, Oneonta struck first in the top of the second. Sophomore
Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) served as the first base runner for the Red and White with a one out single down the left field line. After advancing to second on a groundout by
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), the shortstop crossed the plate when classmate Jenn Brocco ripped a two-out double to right center on the first pitch she saw.

Cortland responded one inning later. The lead off hitter, Devynn Wilder, reached after being hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a sac bunt in the next at-bat. A ground out to DeAngelis by Jamie Bucci moved Wilder to third. Two batters later, Niki Barbato hit an RBI single through the left side.

Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the sixth. The senior reached with a lead off single through the right side. Junior
Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) moved Marzillo to second with a sac bunt, before a wild pitch allowed Marzillo to get to third. Senior
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) came to the plate with one down and Marzillo on third. The catcher took a 3-1 pitch to right for a sac fly to score the run.

Brocco led the Oneonta offense going 2-3 from the plate with her RBi double. As a team, the Red and White did not strikeout in the game.

DeAngelis (10-3) gave up just the one run on four hits while striking out five and walking a pair for the win.

Game 2:Â
Cortland responded to the Game 1 loss in the first inning of the nightcap. The hosts' first five batters reached base. The first run scored on a muffed throw by Marzillo. On the following play, Mikayla Shade hit a three-run home run to left center. Brocco moved from third base to pitch following the home run, retiring three of the next four batters.

Oneonta went on to score in the third, fourth and fifth innings to tie the game. After freshman
Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) knocked a two-out double to center, Marzillo scored her with a single through the right side.
Rivera led off the fourth with a single to right, after advancing to second on a wild pitch she would be pinch ran for by senior
Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park). Cuevas moved Brieva to third on a full count single to left, before the senior scored on an O'Gorman sac fly.

Junior
Kristyn Neroda (Pearl River/Pearl River), who was in the flex position following the first inning pitching change, pinch ran for Lichtenstein who hit a one-out double to right. Rivera lined out to third on the next play, but a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Neroda to move the base. After Cuevas walked, O'Gorman singled to first scoring Neroda and moving Cuevas to third; O'Gorman advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman. On the next play, Cuevas crossed the plate on a wild pitch that advanced O'Gorman to third. Brocco was intentionally walked and stole second, but
Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) ended the inning on a ground out to second.

Cortland responded with runs in the fifth and sixth to clinch the win.

Brocco took the loss in relief throwing six innings allowing a pair of runs, none earned, on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Senior
Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) started the game giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits facing four batters.

Overall:Lichtenstein and classmate
Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) each went 2-6 on the day, while Brocco had a 2-4 afternoon. Cuevas scored a pair of runs as O'Gorman knocked in two. O'Gorman and Marzillo each extend their hitting streaks to eight, while Marzillo matches a team season-high 15 game streak of reaching base.

Lichtenstein now has 32 hits on the year, tying her for the conference lead. Rivera's 20 RBI ties her atop the SUNYAC.

DeAngelis reigns supreme in the wins department among SUNYAC schools.

Oneonta takes a few days off before a busy weekend on the road. They will be at Fredonia on Friday, Buffalo State on Saturday and in Oswego on Sunday
