The SUNY Oneonta baseball team split its doubleheader versus SUNY Canton today in Winter Haven, Fla. The Red Dragons got solid pitching and timely hitting in a game one, 4-2, win, but couldn't hold a 6-2 lead in game two, as they fell 16-6.

In game 1, Oneonta (1-2) scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) drew a two-out walk and then stole second. Sophomore
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) then stepped up and drilled an RBI single to center field to drive in Mastroianni.

Canton countered in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs to gain the lead. The Kangaroos hit back-to-back singles that each drove in a single run.

Oneonta came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. Junior
Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central) hit a one-out single to center field and came around to score on an RBI double by senior
Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham).

One inning later, the Red Dragons would score the go-ahead run while adding an insurance run to take a 4-2 lead. Senior
Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue) reached on an error to start the inning. He came around to score on an RBI double to left field by sophomore
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal), who advanced to third on the throw. Kies would score right away on a sacrifice fly by junior
Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall).

Freshman
Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) made his collegiate debut a memorable one on the bump for Oneonta. The rookie struck out five and allowed five hits and two earned runs to earn his first collegiate complete game victory.

In the second game, Oneonta jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held a 6-2 advantage entering the bottom of the fourth inning. In the Canton half of the fourth, they exploded for 11 runs to turn its four-run deficit into a seven-run lead. They would add on in the later innings en route to a 16-6 victory.
