Marzillo, O’Gorman Homers Power Red Dragons in Game 1 at King’s

Fall in game 2 5-3

March 30, 2015

Wilkes Barre, Pa. – The SUNY Oneonta softball team took to the field for the first time in 16 days when they traveled to King's College. The Red Dragons and Monarchs split the afternoon with Oneonta taking game one 6-3, and King's taking the night cap 5-3.

Game 1:
Senior Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) and sophomore Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) combined to knock in all six runs to power the Red Dragon offense, while sophomore pitcher Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) fanned eight to pick up her fifth win of the season.

O'Gorman made her first plate appearance with one out in the top of the second inning. The left fielder belted a homer to deep right center field to give the Red and White a 1-0 lead. The very next batter, Marzillo went deep to left center to give Oneonta a 2-0 lead.

DeAngelis struck out seven over the first seven through the first three frames, including five in a row to end the second and finish off the third.

The offense went back to work in the top of the fourth. Junior designated player Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) extended her streak of getting on base to 11 straight with a leadoff walk. Two batters later, O'Gorman singled to right to set up a one out, runners on first and second situation for Marzillo. The first baseman sent a three run shot to right pushing the score to 5-0 in favor of the Red Dragons and chasing the Monarch pitcher.

The score remained the same until the latter half of the sixth a two RBI double by King's Amy Kowalczyk followed by an RBI single by Debra Renner brought the Monarchs to within a pair, but Oneonta wouldn't break.

Freshman Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) led the seventh inning off with a single to center, Cuevas followed up by drawing a walk. Senior catcher Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) reached on a one out error by the shortstop moving Cuevas to second and Lefebvre to third for O'Gorman. The sophomore drew a walk to bring in an insurance run.

The 6-3 win brought the Red Dragons to 10-3 prior to the night cap. O'Gorman went 2-3 at the dish as she knocked in a pair of runs and crossed the dish twice herself. Marzillo went 2-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Oneonta, collectively, pounded out nine hits. DeAngelis moved to 5-2 following her seven inning, eight strikeout performance. She was charged with three runs on six hits with one walk.

Game 2:
The Monarchs jumped on the Red Dragons early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Oneonta responded with a three run fourth. Lichtenstein, Rivera and O'Gorman each singled up the middle with one out in the inning before Marzillo put an RBI single to right. Senior Nichole Paolino (Catskill/Catskill) came in to pinch hit for sophomore Shelby Cleaveland (Oneonta/Oneonta), reaching on a fielder's choice on a play that scored Rivera on an error by a shortstop. O'Gorman took advantage of a wild pitch to cross the plate for the last run of the inning.
King's answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on another in the fifth.

The Red and White recorded eight hits in the game, led by O'Gorman's 2-2 performance. Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) took the loss to move to 4-2. The senior gave up five runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking three in 4.2 innings of work.

The Red and White are scheduled to return to action on Friday when New Paltz visits for a SUNYAC doubleheader. First game is slated for 3:00 pm.
