Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball knocked out of SUNYAC tournament

Red Dragons finish season 16-11

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team was making its first SUNYAC tournament semifinal appearance since 2012, unfortunately it would be where their run came to an end, as they were upended by top-seeded SUNY Geneseo 62-49.  The loss ends the season for the Red Dragons with an overall record of 16-11.

The Blue Knights will play SUNY Cortland in the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 4pm.  Cortland advanced to the tournament final with its win against New Paltz 57-48.

Oneonta jumped to a quick 7-0 lead and carried the play for most of the first half, carving out a lead of 21-14 after senior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) converted 1-of-2 free throws with 6:32 remaining in the opening frame.  The Red Dragons earned its lead shooting 50 percent from the floor including a pair from long range.  Freshman Jillian Davis (Queensbury/Queensbury) gave Oneonta a lift off the bench, scoring six of her eight first half points during her first six minutes.

Geneseo then ran off eight unanswered over the next 1:18 to take its first lead of the contest at 22-21.  Oneonta countered with a three-pointer by junior Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and another bucket by Davis to go back ahead 26-22.  Cohen finished the game as the high scorer for the Red Dragons with nine points.

Geneseo then strung 11 straight points together to grab the lead back, 33-26, with 1:14 to go in the half.  The Knights carried a 35-32 lead into halftime.

A jump shot by Longto at the 16:45 mark of the second half tied the game for the last time at 39-39.  Eight unanswered points over the next four minutes put Geneseo ahead to stay.

Geneseo outrebounded Oneonta 41-33 and outscored the Red Dragons 40-6 in the paint.  Shannon McGinnis and Allison McKenna each recorded a double-double to lead the Knights.  McGinnis scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and McKenna posted 12 points and 11 boards.
