Women's soccer upended in NCAA second round

Red Dragons finish brilliant season 15-4-2

PITTSBURGH, PA - The brilliant season for the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team came to a close today with a 1-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon in the second round of the NCAA tournament.  The Red Dragons 2015 season ends with an overall record of 15-4-2.  The 15 wins for Oneonta was its most since 2010 when they won 17 games.  This is also the second time in the last three years that the Red Dragons had advanced into the second round of the NCAA tournament.

SUNY Oneonta offense was contained in today's match, as they were held to six shots total with two reaching the Carnegie Mellon keeper.

Oneonta started overtime with the ball and earned a free kick deep in the Tartans' defense. The free kick was cleared by the Tartan defense but landed at the foot of Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) who sent a shot forward, but was right at junior keeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) in goal for the Tartans.

Liston then sent a long punt forward and past midfield where sophomore Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) flicked it forward. Stritter picked up the ball in stride and with a long touch past a defender cut the ball across the front of the 18-yard box and around Oneonta keeper Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) and finished a shot to the open net.

The Tartans had two shots on goal in the first half and sophomore Morgan Kontor (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) hit the crossbar in the 66th minute. In the 86th minute, a header by senior Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) sailed just high of the goal following a corner kick by sophomore Tori Iatarola.

Liston made two saves for the game to earn her ninth shutout of the season. With the win, the Tartans set a new school record for wins in a season with 17.

Stark, who entered the match in the 32nd minute, finished the game with four saves.
