Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse upends SUNY Geneseo 10-8

Red Dragons off to a 2-0 start in the SUNYAC

Senior Daniel Stern scored a goal and added four assists to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team to a 10-8 win today against visiting SUNY Geneseo.  The Red Dragons are off to a 2-0 start in the SUNYAC, as they won their third straight to raise its overall record to 4-7.  The loss for Geneseo dropped them to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Today's game came down to the fourth quarter, as the two were tied at eight apiece.  An unassisted goal by junior Anthony Laureano at 8:04 and a second goal by freshman Robert Neubert III at 7:23 proved to be the difference in the final score.

The Oneonta defense, anchored by freshman goalie, Zach Reilly, kept the Blue Knights off the scoreboard in the final quarter.  Reilly made nine saves in today's game, as he remains perfect thus far in his first three collegiate starts for Oneonta.

Geneseo jumped out to a 2-0 lead into the middle of the first quarter.  Andre Keating scored the opening goal and assisted on the second goal, which was scored by Sam Thompson.

Oneonta came back to tie the score before the end of the quarter on goals by sophomore Michael Metzger and freshman Austin McAskill.  Metzger, who finished the game with three goals, scored while Oneonta was a man up.

Stern, Metzger and sophomore Connor Coyle all scored in the second quarter while the Red Dragons held Geneseo to only one goal to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.

The two teams combined for eight goals in the third quarter with five of them scored by the Blue Knights.  Sam Thompson had two of the goals for Geneseo while Metzger, Coyle and Neubert each scored for Oneonta.  Geneseo's final goal of the quarter came with just four seconds remaining after Neubert had scored with 13 seconds to go.

The shots were 41-40 in favor of Geneseo in the game.  The Red Dragons collected 34 ground balls to Geneseo's 26.  The face-offs were even at 11 apiece and Geneseo converted 3-of-6 extra man opportunities while Oneonta was 1-for-4.

Today's win for Oneonta also marked the first time since 2001 that they had defeated Geneseo.

Oneonta will have the week off before its next game next Saturday at SUNY Cortland.  The game is scheduled for a 3:30pm start.
