Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse defeats Oswego to earn playoff berth

The task for SUNY Oneonta today was win and you're in.

Win they did, as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Oswego State, 13-11, to earn the final SUNYAC tournament berth.  Oneonta (5-10/3-3 SUNYAC) will now play at rival SUNY Cortland in the tournament semifinals this coming Wednesday beginning at 4pm.

After Oswego (6-9/0-6 SUNYAC) scored a man-up goal to open the scoring, Oneonta ripped off three unanswered to take a 3-1 lead.  Senior Daniel Stern scored a pair while freshman Robert Neubert III scored the third goal.  Stern would score his third goal of the quarter with 1:04 remaining to give the Red Dragons a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The two teams played a defensive second quarter with only three goals combined being scored.  Fortunately, Oneonta scored two of them to lead at halftime 7-4.

Sophomore Connor Coyle scored a man-up goal to start the third quarter before Oswego bounced back with a pair to pull within two goals at 8-6.  Jimmy Cordon scored a man-up goal at 11:05 to get the Lakers to 8-6.

A man-up goal by Chris Porten closed the gap to 10-9 at the 5:14 mark, but an extra man goal by sophomore Mike Metzger at 2:44 pushed Oneonta's lead back to two goals heading into the final quarter.

Junior Anthony Laureano gave Oneonta a 12-9 lead in the first 25 seconds of the fourth quarter off an assist from Stern.

Connor Khammar then scored back-to-back unassisted goals to bring Oswego back to within one goal at 12-11 with 6:19 left in regulation.

With 2:30 remaining sophomore Devon Casey took a pass from Stern and slipped it past the Oswego goalie to make it 13-11.  From there, it was the defense and goalie Zach Reilly that secured the win for Oneonta.

Reilly finished the game with 14 saves today while his counterpart, Bryan Martin, made 11 saves.

Stern and Casey each collected five points in the game to lead the attack.  Coyle and Metzger each scored three goals for the Red Dragons.
