Game Recap: Softball |

Softball continues to roll

Record is now 23-9 overall and 13-3 in the SUNYAC

The Red Dragons roll on as they take two from visiting Buffalo State in a SUNYAC doubleheader today on Red Dragon Softball Field, taking the first game 2-0 and capturing the second, 6-1. Oneonta improve to 23-9 overall with the wins and 13-3 in the conference.

Freshman pitcher, Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial), continues to be dominant on the mound as she picked up two more wins tonight to run her total to thirteen for the season this far.

In game one, DeAngelis allowed just two hits while striking out four.

The Red Dragons took the lead in the second inning 1-0 thanks in part to a fielding error that allowed Nicole Marzillo to reach first with one out. Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) singled up the middle to advance Marzillo to second and Kristyn Neroda brought her around with a bloop single down the left field line behind third.

Oneonta would add an insurance run in the fifth to secure the 2-0 victory. After a Meaghan Foster single to the shortstop and stolen base, the Bengals would get the next two to line out and strike out. Up stepped Traci Lichtenstein, who has had a hot bat lately, and she delivered as she singled up the middle to bring Foster around.

Game two saw Buffalo State (15-13/7-7 SUNYAC) take a 1-0 lead after the top of the first as lead-off batter, Stephanie Novo, drew a walk. Novo moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chrissy Rennard  and scored on a Joanna Bardak double to deep center field.

The Red Dragons came storming back as they plated 2 in the first and three in the second inning. Jamie Whittam drew a lead-off walk and Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston) laid down a perfect bunt to the vacated second base position to get on while Whittam went around to third. Brocco would steal second and Lichtenstein singled up the center to bring both runs home.

The second inning started off with back-to-back walks drawn by Neroda and Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). Foster singled back to the pitcher, who was indecisive on where to make a play, allowing all runners to move up a base. After two outs, Lichtenstein again singled up the middle to bring home two runs while Brianna Rivera singled up the middle to bring home the third.

Oneonta would plate their final run in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Whittam led the inning off with a single to third base and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lichtenstein singled to the shortstop, moving Whittam to third. Whittam would score on a Rivera single to left center.

The Red Dragons complete its SUNYAC regular-seaon schedule tomorrow when they host Fredonia for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.

Tomorrow's game will also support cancer research and education through the "StrikeOut Cancer" campaign. The American Cancer Society and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) started this initiative more than ten years ago and has raised thousands of dollars to support the fight against cancer. These vital resources allow the American Cancer Society to continue its lifesaving efforts to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from the disease through research, education, advocacy and service. The team will be selling t-shirts, taking donations and before the game, both teams will be holding placards with the names of people in their lives who have been affected by cancer.
