Box Score 2 The SUNY Oneonta softball team found themselves locked in a battle with visiting King's College today, but came away empty handed as the Lady Monarchs swept Oneonta in a non-conference doubleheader. Oneonta (15-7) fell to King's College by scores of 7-6 and 7-5.
In the opening game of the afternoon, King's got on the board in the first inning by putting four runs across home plate after hitting three consecutive hits up the middle including a pair of doubles by Amanda Cardone and Amy Kowalczyk.
Oneonta got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second in part to a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed
Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore), who had singled to lead-off the inning, and
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) to score.
The Lady Monarchs would add two more in the top of the third and Oneonta would counter on a grand slam by O'Gorman to clear the bases and knot the score at 6-6.
King's (18-8) would plate the winning run in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead for good. Oneonta native,
Seneca Baldwin (Oneonta/Oneonta), came in as relief and held the Lady Monarchs scoreless, but the Red Dragons' bats were muted by King's starter Brittany Haight as she pitched a complete game.
An error by the left fielder, a single by
Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston) and a three-run homerun by
Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) gave Oneonta a 3-0 lead to start the second game of the afternoon.
King's would not go away as they scored one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. Oneonta added a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth on a
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) single that scored Marzillo.
In the top of the seventh, Jenn Harnischfeger doubled to left center and after a couple of bloop hits and singles, the Lady Monarchs stormed back scoring five in the inning to take a 7-4 lead.
The Red Dragons did not go quietly as Marzillo homered over the center field fence to cut the score to 7-5, but that would be as close as they would get as King's starter, Rachel Linso, got two consecutive ground outs to end the game.
Both games were even as Oneonta had 11 hits to King's 10 in the first game and each had nine in the second.
Rivera and Marzillo had a pair of hits in each game and
Kristyn Neroda (Pearl River/Pearl River) had two hits in the first.
Oneonta travels to New Paltz tomorrow, April 11th, for a SUNYAC doubleheader. The game is slated to start at 3:00 p.m.
