The No. 11 Ithaca Bombers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter en route to a 15-6 victory today against host SUNY Oneonta in nonconference men's lacrosse action. The victory raised the Bombers record to 5-1 overall while the loss for the Red Dragons dropped them to 1-6.
Jake Long and John Januszkiewicz each scored a pair of goals in the opening quarter for Ithaca to lead the attack. Januszkiewicz led all scorers in the contest with four while adding one assist for a five-point afternoon. Long finished the game with three goals.
Oneonta scored the opening goal of the second quarter, as sophomore Taylor Kalbacher notched his first goal of the season unassisted.
Ithaca went up 8-1 with 1:43 left in the quarter on back-to-back goals by Michael Walker and Justin Bird.
Connor Coyle got one back for the Red Dragons 32 seconds later before Steve Danylyshyn scored with 17 seconds to go in the quarter to give the Bombers a 9-2 lead at halftime.
Ithaca scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 13-2 lead. Walker started the run with a man-up goal while Januszkiewicz ended it with a man-up goal of his own.
Trailing 14-3 entering the fourth quarter, Oneonta put up three goals including the first collegiate goal for freshman Matthew Mazzie that made the score 15-6 with 20 seconds to go in the game.
Kevin Fitzpatrick made seven saves for Oneonta after entering the game at the start of the second quarter. Scott Sidnam made nine saves in three quarters as the starter for Ithaca to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Oneonta will be on the road this Saturday against Wheaton (MA) College beginning 1pm.
