Women’s Basketball Overcomes 15 point Deficit in Win

Red Dragons Drop Potsdam 54-43

December 5, 2014
POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team traveled to Potsdam to take on the SUNY Potsdam Bears in the SUNYAC opener Friday night. The Red Dragons would walk away with a 54-43 victory in the contest. Junior point guard Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) lead the Red Dragons with 15 points, while senior captain Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) added 11.

The Red and White took the contest behind a strong second half performance. The host Bears took a 25-18 lead into the half before Oneonta doubled them up in the second half 36-18 to power the victory.

Junior Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) tallied the first four points of the second stanza on a pair of free throws and a layup. Cohen, junior Caitlin Cariseo (Syracuse/Jamesville Dewitt), rookie Tyra Harrison (Baldwin/Baldwin), and Longto each pulled the Red Dragons within a trio of points through the first portion of the second half before junior Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) gave the team its first lead of the game with a layup with 9:20 left on the clock, a lead they would not relinquish.
'
The team would build from there. Newcomer Jillian Davis (Queensbury/Queensbury) put the team up but half a dozen with a layup at the 8:08 mark. She would nail a pair of free throws to give the Red and White an eight point advantage with 5:25 remaining.

Cohen would provide Oneonta with a team-high 13 point lead on the back end of a pair of free throws with less than a minute remaining solidifying the win.

The Red Dragons shot 37% from the field, going 21.4% from distance and 17 of 28 from the charity stripe while improving to 5-1 on the young season. They return to action tomorrow when they travel to Plattsburgh for another SUNYAC contest.
