Freshman center Alexandra Leslie scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards in her collegiate debut in leading the University of Rochester to a season opening 65-56 win against host SUNY Oneonta. The Yellow Jackets scored 37 points in the second half to erase a five-point halftime deficit while holding the Red Dragons to 23 points.

The Yellow Jackets battled early on into the second half and continued to cut into the Oneonta lead until an old fashioned three-point play by freshman Mary Kronenwetter gave Rochester its first lead of the game at 39-37. The Yellow Jackets would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest while continuing to pull away from Oneonta.

Rochester led by as many as 14 points with 4:47 remaining in the game. The Yellow Jackets used 14 offensive rebounds in the game that led to 11, second chance points.

Junior point guard
Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led Oneonta with 17 points in her debut in an Oneonta Red Dragon uniform. She also dished out five assists while collecting four steals in 37 minutes.

Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) recorded her first double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Red Dragons made 13-of-15 free throws while hitting 3-of-7 shots from behind the arc. Rochester made 12-of-19 from the charity stripe and only 5-of-20 from long range.

Oneonta grabbed an early 5-0 lead in the game.  Cohen opened the scoring with a three-pointer. Oneonta led the entire first half, which included an eight-point bulge on two separate occasions. A late spurt by Rochester made the score 33-28 at the break in favor of Oneonta.

Oneonta will play its first road game this coming Tuesday when they travel to Utica College for a contest beginning at 6pm.
