The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team played host to the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in the opening round of the SUNYAC Tournament today on a chilly Saturday afternoon. The teams battled to a scoreless draw through 110 minutes of play forcing a shootout, which Plattsburgh took by a count of 4-2.
The Red and White dominated the early portion of the contest registering four shots in the game's first 22 minutes. The first three shots were on target but could not find the back of the net, while the fourth was rung off the cross bar by freshman
Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South). Of the seven shots fired by Oneonta in the first half, five of them ended up on target.
Neither team could gain complete control in the second half. Each keeper made a pair of saves in the half to force extra time.
After a quiet first overtime period, Oneonta's
Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) was able to fire two shots at the Cardinal keeper, but was unable to bring home the win.
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) got the nod in goal for Oneonta making four saves.
Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) and
Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) scored in the penalty kick tiebreaker, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals made all four of their attempts.
The Red and White finish the season with a 7-8-4 record.
