Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

LaPier Heads Women’s Soccer to Win Over Brockport

Red Dragons earn first conference win

October 3, 2014

Junior forward Caitlyn LaPier (Chazy/Chazy) used her head to lift the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team to its first SUNYAC win of the season. Her second goal of the season proved to be the difference in a 2-1 decision over Brockport Friday evening on a beautiful fall night on Red Dragon Soccer Field.

The Red and White dominated play in the first half firing seven shots, three of which ended up on target. Starting goalkeeper Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) denied both shots she faced.

The Red Dragons continued dominance in the second half registering a corner kick and three shots , including a header, and a goal within the first five minutes of the frame.  Freshman Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) served a corner at the 46:33 mark, leading to a Julia Cranz (Huntington/Walt Whitman) header that was sent high. Senior captain Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) fired the first shot on target of the half just two and a half minutes in. The Golden Eagles, however, would succumb to the pressure. Taking advantage of a Brockport foul, The Red and White again applied pressure in front of the cage when Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) found the loose ball in front and met twine on the far side.

LaPier proved her head was in the game on the very next shot, five minutes later. Again playing off of a Brockport foul, Rolston struck the restart from just inside midfield where LaPier fought through a crowd to get a head on the ball scoring just to the left of the keeper.

Brockport scored in the 77th minute to pull within one but was unable to tie the contest.

SUNY Oneonta returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon for a 1 pm contest with conference rival Geneseo.
