Buffalo, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team traveled to Buffalo to finish off regular season SUNYAC play against the Bengals needing a win or tie to secure a hosting seed in the play in round of the conference tournament. After 110 minutes of play, the Red Dragons and Bengals played to a 1-1 draw.
The Bengals struck first, on the game's first shot, a header off a corner kick late in the third minute. Senior
Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) took the Red Dragons' first shot in the 17
th minute. Junior
Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora) had a great opportunity to put the Red and White on the board when she rang a shot off the crossbar in the 35
th minute.
Oneonta put the pressure on in the early stages of the second stanza leading to a penalty kick being awarded in the 61
st minute. Junior
Caitlyn LaPier (Chazy/Chazy) spotted up the shot, but was unable to convert. The Red Dragons continued the pressure 15 minutes later, when
Taylor Messina (Smithtown/Smithtown East) collected a
Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) shot off the post to knot the contest at one apiece. Messina headed another shot on target in the 88
th minute only to be denied.
Junior goalkeeper
Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) made a huge penalty kick save with 33 ticks left in the second overtime to conserve the draw and locking the Red Dragons to host the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament next weekend. The game will be at 1 pm on Red Dragon Soccer Field against an opponent to be determined.
