Game Recap: Baseball |

Sophomore Steve Ascher leads baseball past Plattsburgh

SUNY Oneonta sophomore pitcher, Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck), went the distance today to pick up his third win of the season, as the Red Dragons opened its home schedule with a 4-2 win versus Plattsburgh.  Ascher struck out seven batters and allowed only four hits and one earned run in recording his first complete game of the season in his seventh start of the season.

Leading the offense for Oneonta (7-12/2-0 SUNYAC) was senior Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville), who connected for his first home run of the season in the bottom of the first that brought home classmate Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland) to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead.  Plata finished the game with three hits and two runs scored.

Oneonta took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) hit a two-out single to right field to drive in Plata from third base.  Plata reached on a throwing error Shane Houppert, which led to the unearned run.  Plata benefitted from a balk and passed ball to advance to third base.

The Red Dragons added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when senior Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central) hit his first collegiate home run with two outs.

Plattsburgh (5-13/1-6 SUNYAC) scored single runs in the first and third innings.  Brian Latulipe hit a one-out double to right center field to drive in Luke Weaver, who was hit by a pitch to leadoff the game.

Plattsburgh second run came in on a ground out to shortstop.  JD Springer walked to start the third and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Weaver, as Oneonta left third base uncovered.  Mat Chavez grounded out to drive in Springer.

Senior Kyle Kelly only lasted two plus innings allowing five hits and two earned runs before giving way to Mike Doughtie, who went the rest of the way.

The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
