Senior Amber Carozza pitched a one-hit complete game for her tenth win of the season as visiting New Paltz won game 1 of a double header 2-1. The two wins gave New Paltz (20-17/11-7 SUNYAC) a sweep of the Red Dragons today.
Â
Oneonta (8-28/4-14 SUNYAC) had a 1-0 lead going into the top of the seventh as they plated a run in the bottom half of the first. A fielding error by the third baseman allowed junior Chandler Campbell to get aboard at first base. After a ground out, freshman Cassandra Kohler doubled over the center fielders head to put the Red Dragons on the board.
Â
Oneonta's Katie O'Flynn and Carozza both settled in as the pitchers allowed a combined 2 hits over the next five innings before New Paltz broke it open in the seventh.
Â
A leadoff walk followed by a Marissa Monaco single, put runners in scoring position. A second consecutive single by Chelsea Kull tied the game at 1-1. The Hawks then took the lead on a sacrifice fly to left field by Meg Brewer.
Â
It was all Carozza needed as she got the next three batters to ground out for the victory.
Â
New Paltz won the second game 12-2 in five innings. Ten runs, nine unearned, in the first inning was all they needed as they cruised to the victory.
Â
The Red Dragons got on the board in the fourth and fifth innings with single runs in each. Sophomore Brianna Rivera reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman to start the fourth. Kristyn Neroda came into pinch run for Rivera and advanced to second on a passed ball. With two outs,
Jamie Whittam singled to left field, scoring Neroda.
Â
In the fifth inning, Campbell walked with two outs and was pinch run for by Gemma Mahoney. The next batter, Kohler, was hit by a pitch to move Mahoney to second. Kelly Graham stepped up and hit a blooper over the first baseman that stayed fair to score Mahoney.
Â
Whittam finished the game 2-for-2 with one run batted in.
Â
New Paltz's starting pitcher, Katie Rutcofsky, allowed four hits and one earned run to go along with five strikeouts in picking up her sixth win of the season.
