Senior Mike Stark hit an RBI single down the left field line in the bottom of the 13th inning to drive in sophomore John Rauseo with the winning run, as the visiting Oswego Lakers won, 6-5 to complete a sweep of SUNY Oneonta today in SUNYAC action. The two wins gave Oswego (13-10/6-4 SUNYAC) a sweep of the three-game series, which had to be played in Oneonta due to field conditions in Oswego.
Oneonta (9-18/4-6 SUNYAC) had an opportunity to go ahead in the top of the 13th with a runner 90 feet away, but couldn't get him home. Sophomore
Jake Robinson (Oyster Bay/Oyster Bay) led off the inning with a double to left center and then was sacrificed to third by
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island). After a ground out to the pitcher by
Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central), the next two batters were hit to load the bases. The final out came on the force play at third base.
Oswego jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings in this one. Tim Smith had an RBI single in the first inning while Stark and Scott Buniak had RBI singles in the second inning.
The Red Dragons got two runs back in their at-bat in the third inning. With runners at second and third,
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) drilled a double to left field to drive in seniors
Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland) and
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place).
Oswego added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go back ahead by three runs. Oneonta intentionally walked Mike McMullen to load the bases with one out. The next batter was Brian Hamilton and he made Oneonta pay with a two-run single to left field that scored Buniak and Smith.
Oneonta came right back in their half of the sixth inning to close the gap back to one run with two runs of their own. Massaroni hit his second straight double to start the inning, which was followed by an RBI single by
Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley). With two outs and Orlando on second, sophomore
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)) hit a single up the middle to drive in Orlando.
In the eighth inning, the Red Dragons struck again with two outs to tie the game. They were aided by a throwing error by Stark, which allowed Stamile to reach and Orlando to score from second base. Orlando singled to start the inning before being moved over to second by Salvatore.
Relief pitchers then took control of the game, as both Miles Kelly for Oswego and
Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) for Oneonta pitched the game to the 13th. Kelly threw 5 1/3 innings of three hit ball allowing only one unearned run before giving way to Ryan Donovan who closed out the 13th. Donovan picked up his second win of the season.
Hegmann had been cruising along after entering the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. He allowed only four hits while striking out two batters.
Smith and Stark led the Oswego offense with three hits apiece. Stark and Hamilton each collected a pair of RBIs.
Massaroni and Orlando had two hits each for Oneonta.
In the first game of the day, Oswego jumped out to an 11-0 lead after three innings en route to a 13-1 rout. Oswego scored eight runs in the first inning, taking advantage of three Oneonta errors.
Oneonta plays on Tuesday at home, as they host New Paltz for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
