The SUNY Oneonta baseball team got two strong pitching performances today and earned a split of a doubleheader at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Oneonta (1-5) lost the first game 2-1, but bounced back to win game 2, 1-0.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings before giving way to senior
Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush), who recorded his first save of 2013. Ascher struck out seven batters and allowed only five hits in today's outing, which evened his record at 1-1.
Oneonta manufactured its run in the top of the sixth inning. Senior
Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then was sacrificed to second by classmate
Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland). An infield single by
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) gave the Red Dragons runners at the corners. After Haussel stole second to put two runners in scoring position, Chris Orlando hit a 2-2 pitch to right field, which was deep enough to score Peluso from third.
Haussel finished the game with two of Oneonta's four hits in the game.
In game 1, Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Orlando hit a two-out single to drive in Peluso from third base. Peluso led off the inning with an infield single to third base.
St. Mary's scored its two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two out rally off losing pitcher
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane). Mastrianni cruised through the first five innings allowing just three hits entering the sixth. He finished the game with one strikeout while forcing 10 ground ball outs.
Sophomore
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) led the offense with a pair of hits in the game including a double.
Oneonta will be back in action again tomorrow when they face Frostburg State at Mount Saint Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD. The two teams will play a single game beginning at 1pm.
