Wrestlers fall hard at Ithaca 36-9

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College wrestling team, ranked 13th nationally, won the first five bouts of the match and went on to a 36-9 dual-match victory over visiting Oneonta at Ben Light Gymnasium on Thursday. Ithaca improved to 7-4 on the season and Oneonta fell to 6-9. The Bombers won three bouts by pin and another by forfeit to earn 24 of their team points in the match.

The Bombers started things off with a forfeit victory by Ricky Gomez (Brentwood/Brentwood) at 125 pounds. Alex Gomez (Brentwood/Brentwood), ranked fifth nationally at 133 pounds, posted a 5-4 decision victory over Benjamin Mikac of Oneonta. Mikac scored a late escape and takedown but couldn't overcome Gomez' lead that deep into the third period.

At 141, Dominick Giacolone (Cato/Cato-Meridian) of Ithaca and Sean Hanson (Lorraine/South Jefferson) of Oneonta headed to a one-minute overtime period tied 1-1 after three rounds of wrestling, and Giacolone earned the victory with a takedown 52 seconds into the extra period.

The Bombers won three of the next four bouts by pinfall, with Kevin Collins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) taking care of business in the second round of his bout at 149, and nationally-ranked wrestlers Derek Brenon (Watertown/Immaculate Heart Central) and Jules Doliscar (Dix Hills/Holy Trinity) winning by fall in the first round. Brenon wrapped things up in 2:14 at 157 pounds and Doliscar raced out to a big early lead with nine points in the first 90 seconds of the opening round in his match at 174, then finished his opponent with a pin at 1:54.

Dan Glinko (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) was a 6-2 winner for the Bombers in his 184-pound bout. Ithaca's Cris Ramirez (Bronx/Milton Hershey) scored a third-period reversal to take the lead in his heavyweight bout and held on to that advantage to post a 2-1 decision victory.

Ithaca returns to action Friday, Feb. 15 with a home dual at the Glazer Arena inside of Ithaca's Athletics & Events Center at 7 p.m. against Wilkes.
