Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball wins Skidmore Invitational

Sarah Longto selected as Tournament MVP

Junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) scored 12 points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked four shots in helping to lead the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team to a come-from-behind victory today against host Skidmore College 66-56.  The victory, coupled with last night's victory over Hamilton College, gave the Oneonta (2-0) the team title.  Longto, who scored 17 points last night, was named MVP of the tournament.

Senior Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) was Oneonta's top scorer in the contest with 16 points, adding six rebounds.  Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford), who joined Longto on the All-Tournament Team, scored 13 points.  Sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) registered 10 points and eight rebounds.

Skidmore's Angela Botiba, an All-Tournament selection, led all scorers, recording a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, Jordyn Warttshad 11 points and Migle Vilunaite had seven points and 14 rebounds.

Skidmore opened the game with a 10-3 run, capped by a Jodyn Wartts three-pointer. The Red Dragons came back within four with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, but the Thoroughbreds pushed back ahead, opening a 12-point lead with a three-pointer from Molly McLaughlin.

The Red Dragons ended the first half on an 8-3 run, and Schilling's layup with three seconds to play cut Skidmore's lead to three at 32-29 going into the break.

A three-point make by Crawford to start the second half tied the game at 32 apiece.  From there, the Red Dragons continued to build its lead, getting it to as many 14 points with eight minutes to go in the game.  Skidmore (0-2) only got as close as nine points with just under two minutes remaining.

Last night, in the opening game of the tournament, the Red Dragons battled Hamilton College and came away with a 70-65 victory.  Three players were in double figures for Oneonta, led by Longto, who tied her collegiate career high of 17 points.

Schilling scored 16 points while collecting four assists and four steals.  Crawford added 14 points while dishing out a collegiate career best eight assists.

A basket by Crawford at the 6:47 mark of the first half gave the Red Dragons its largest lead of the game at 31-20.  Hamilton stormed back to close the half with an 18-6 run including a three-pointer to end the first half, which allowed the Continentals to take a slime 38-37 lead at the break.

Oneonta opened the second half with an 11-4 run to go up 48-41. A three-pointer by Hamilton with 6:40 to play gave them a one-point lead at 57-56, but the Red Dragons pushed back, taking the last lead they would need with their next trip down the floor thanks to a Brianna Spector (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Dublin) three-point shot.

Oneonta finished the game shooting 52 percent from the floor while connecting on 11 of 13 from the free throw line.

Oneonta will play its home opener on Tuesday night versus Utica College beginning at 6pm.
