The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team opened its 2012 home schedule in grand style by shutting out No. 14 Williams College. The win for the Red Dragons was its first of the season as they stand at 1-1-1 overall while the Ephs open its season with the defeat.
Oneonta didn't take long to get on the scoreboard today as senior
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) scored her first of the season in the seventh minute. Brantmeyer chased down a ball on the far right flank and sent a ball across that looked harmless. But as it closer to the goal it appeared that it had a chance to catch the inside of the left post as the Williams keeper let it go thinking it was headed out of bounds. The ball didn't go out of bounds as it landed in the goal for a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the opening half was played pretty evenly with Oneonta keeping its one-goal lead while taking a slim 5-4 advantage in shots into halftime.
Oneonta continued the pressure early in the second half and capitalized on another long ball sent in from the right flank to go up 2-0. Sophomore
Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tracked down a ball that appeared to be headed out of bounds. After controlling the ball, she sent a long pass to the front of the goal that deflected around and ended up behind the goalkeeper, which senior
Lindsey Doxtader (Oneonta/Oneonta) got to and pushed it to the back of the goal.
Freshman
Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) only had to make three saves in the game as she picked up her first collegiate win and her second shutout of the season. Oneonta finished the game outshooting Williams 14-9 while holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Oneonta will be back in action agin this weekend as they compete in the Oneonta Mayor's Cup Tournament. The Red Dragons will play on Saturday versus The College of New Jersey at Hartwick College beginning at 1pm.
