Softball sweeps SUNY Potsdam on Saturday

Red Dragons record first two conference wins of 2012

POTSDAM – The Oneonta State softball team rebounded from its pair of losses yesterday to Plattsburgh by sweeping SUNY Potsdam today on the road.  The Red Dragons won game 1, 4-2 and won the second game, 9-8.  Oneonta is now 2-4 in the conference and 6-12 overall heading into a busy week of action where they are scheduled to play four home doubleheaders beginning Tuesday versus Rensselaer.

In game 1 of today's twin bill, Oneonta scored all four of its runs on wild pitches, which allowed runners from third base to score.  The Red Dragons finished the first game with five hits including a pair by senior Kalyn Deso.  Freshman Rachel Hitt struck out five batters and allowed four hits and two earned runs in 5-1/3 innings to pick up her first collegiate victory.  Classmate Stephanie Gaska recorded her first collegiate save in pitching the final 1-2/3 innings allowing no hits.

Game 2 was a slugfest with the Red Dragons getting the better of the Bears in the end on the scoreboard.  Freshman Nicole Marzillo was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead the offense that collected 10 hits in the game.  Deso had a pair of hits including a double and two runs batted in.

Starter Katie O'Flynn picked up the win in game 2.  After being lifted in the first inning, she reentered in the fifth inning with Oneonta trailing.  She pitched a total of three innings and allowed four hits and four runs, none of which were earned.  Gaska pitched four innings in relief of O'Flynn and allowed six hits and four runs, three earned.

Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Marzillo doubled in a run while Deso and Laura Loudis each singled home a run.

Potsdam scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added a single run in the second inning as they had a 5-3 lead entering the third.  Oneonta tied the score with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to tie the game at 5-5.

Kate Nawrot hit a solo home run for Potsdam in the bottom of the third to give the Bears the lead back.  Marzillo would hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth to even the game at six apiece.  Potsdam would add single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to hold an 8-6 lead entering the sixth inning.

The Red Dragons came back in the top of the sixth and scored three runs to take back the lead at 9-8.  Marzillo drove in one run with a single.  Deso drove in the second run on a fielder's choice and Tricia Kendziera drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.
