The Oneonta State softball team ended its season on a winning note today as they won the second game of its home doubleheader versus Oswego 9-0 in five innings. Oneonta (12-24/5-13 SUNYAC) dropped today's first game 4-3.
Oswego (14-21/8-10) entered today's twin bill needing just one win to secure the sixth and final spot in the upcoming SUNYAC tournament. The Lakers are qualifying for the conference tournament for the first time.
In the second game, Oneonta took advantage of four Oswego errors, including two in a four-run fourth inning that pushed the Red Dragons lead to 9-0.
The freshman duo of Nicole Marzillo and Brianna Rivera each drove in a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Marzillo and Rivera each collected two hits in the game. Rivera finished the game with four runs batted in.
Freshman pitcher Rachel hit struck out four batters and allowed only three hits to record her fifth win of the season.
Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first aided by a pair of errors by the Lakers. Rivera had the big hit with a two-out single to left field that drove senior Kalyn Deso and sophomore Chandler Campbell.
After adding another run in the second, the Red Dragons scored another pair in the third to go ahead 5-0. The big blow was Deso's fourth home run of the season over the center field fence that scored her and Campbell.
In the opener, Oneonta scored single runs in each of the first three innings and held a 3-1 lead entering the fourth. Freshman Gemma Mahoney scored in the first inning on a passed ball. Oneonta scored its second inning run without getting a hit. Marzillo hit a two-out single in the third to drive in Chandler Campbell.
Oswego scored a single run in the first inning when Dee Apps singled home Sammie Schroeter.
The Lakers scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Sarah Thayer, who was the starting pitcher, singled home Sue Schoff with the first run. The second run scored on a ground out to second base.
Oswego scored the eventual winning run in the fifth inning when Schroeter doubled to left center field to drive in Brittany Carbacio, who doubled to center field to lead off the inning.
Ashley Snyder earned her 12th win of the season in relief of Thayer. She threw 4-1/3 scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing only two hits.
Freshman Katie O'Flynn struck out a season high nine batters in her complete game.
