Junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk scored registered a career high in goals and points in leading the Oneonta State men's lacrosse team into the SUNYAC tournament. Van de Veerdonk scored six times and added two assists as Oneonta (5-10/3-3 SUNYAC) defeated visiting Brockport 16-12. The victory for the Red Dragons secured the fourth and final conference tournament berth. Oneonta will travel to top-seeded SUNY Cortland this Wednesday for its semifinal match up beginning at 4pm. The winner will play in the championship game next Saturday.
Van de Veerdonk single-handedly carried Oneonta in the first period with all four of the Red Dragons goals as they led 4-3 after one period. Two of the goals were assisted by sophomore Daniel Stern.
Both teams opened it up in the second period as both squads combined for 10 goals. Oneonta maintained its lead as they took a 10-7 advantage into halftime.
In the second period, junior John DeOrdio and senior Blair Hanson each scored two goals to lead the Red Dragons. Hanson and DeOrdio finished the game with four goals apiece. DeOrdio added a pair of assists for six points on the day.
Oneonta maintained its three-goal lead entering the fourth period as they carried a 12-9 advantage into the final quarter. Hanson and van de Veerdonk scored back-to-back goals to open the third period before Brockport scored two late goals to get back to within three goals.
Goals by Brad Weber and Brendon Rothfuss brought Brockport to within one at 12-11 early in the fourth period. Three unanswered goals by Oneonta put the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles.
Rothfuss led Brockport with five goals.
“This was an important win for us," said head coach
Dan Mahar. "Though there are several things we could have done better, the effort today was great which has been an issue in some of our losses. Our attack unit had a great day both in terms of points but more importantly with their tenacious riding and groundballs. Our goal from the start this year has been to win the SUNYAC's and this win puts us in position to accomplish that goal. We feel confident heading into Wednesday versus Cortland.”
