The Oneonta State women's basketball completed a weekend sweep in the Rochester area with its 68-61 win today versus Geneseo. Senior
Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) led all scorers with 18 points as Oneonta (14-6/12-2 SUNYAC) pulled out another game down the stretch.
After a
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) jumper tied the score at 15 apiece at the 9:30 mark of the first half, the Red Dragons took control en route to building a 31-19 halftime lead. Geneseo (12-8/7-6 SUNYAC) had a cold first half shooting, hitting only 22 percent from the field.
The Blue Knights came out of halftime and scored the first eight points to cut Oneonta's lead to four points. A three-pointer by Melissa Graham capped the run of eight unanswered. Graham would finish the game with 14 points to go with nine rebounds.
A three-point basket by Cara Manfredi got Geneseo to within two points at 36-34 at the 15:21 mark before Oneonta countered with eight unanswered, capped by a Szkotak jumper.
A 20-9 run by the hosts, gave them a 54-53 lead with just over seven minutes remaining. After a pair of free throws by Bri Dunton three minutes later, Geneseo held its last lead at 56-55.
An old fashioned three-point play by Slagle, who was fouled on a made jump shot gave Oneonta the lead for good. Down the stretch, the Red Dragons converted 8-of-10 free throws to secure the seven-point victory.
Szkotak would finish the game with 12 points while sophomore
Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) added 11 points off the bench for Oneonta. Freshman center,
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston), contributed seven points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Manfredi was the top scorer for Geneseo as she finished the contest with 16 points.
Oneonta remains in first place in the SUNYAC with its 12-2 record. The Red Dragons are a ½ game ahead of Buffalo State, who is 11-2, as they also picked up a pair of wins this weekend.
Oneonta will be back in action next Friday night at home versus Oswego beginning at 6pm. The Red Dragons will be looking to avenge one of its conference losses to the Lakers back in January, 55-49.
