Women's soccer secures bye for SUNYAC tournament

Red Dragons earn #2 seed for conference tournament

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team defeated Buffalo State today 3-1 on the road in the final SUNYAC regular season match of 2012.  With the victory, Oneonta (11-5-1/7-2 SUNYAC) secured the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the conference tournament, which begins next Saturday.  Brockport defeated Plattsburgh at home today to earn the top seed for the tournament.

Yesterday, Oneonta fell to Fredonia 1-0, which set up the must win to secure a first round bye.

Oneonta will play at Ithaca this coming Tuesday at 3pm to end the regular season before waiting a week to play in the semifinals of the SUNYAC tournament at home on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 1:30pm.  The opponent will be announced after Saturday's quarterfinal games.

The first half of today's contest didn't have much going on until the final seven minutes when the two teams combined for three goals.  Oneonta held a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Senior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) got things started with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute.  It was her fifth goal of the season.  Brantmeyer would tally another unassisted goal in the 71st minute to add insurance to the Red Dragons lead.

Shannon Yokopovich tied the score for Buffalo State (5-7-5/3-2-4 SUNYAC) four minutes later on a direct kick from about 30 yards out.

As the first half was coming to a close, junior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sent a through ball into the box to sophomore Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who finished the pass off with a shot to the lower corner of the goal.  The goal came with 13 seconds remaining in the first half and gave Oneonta its lead going into the break.

Oneonta will be making its 17th SUNYAC tournament appearance, as they look for its 14th title and a berth in the NCAA tournament.  The Red Dragons last won the conference tournament in 2010.
