Baseball tripped up in extra innings by Brockport

Red Dragons fall 6-5 in 14 innings

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta baseball team battled back twice from one-run deficits, but fell to Brockport today 6-5 in 14 innings. The Red Dragons trailed in the eighth and then again in the 12th inning before falling for a third straight game to the Golden Eagles.

The loss for Oneonta was its seventh straight as they finish 11-7 in the SUNYAC, which is the third seed for the conference tournament that begins this Friday at Cortland. Their first opponent will be these same Golden Eagles, who completed its suspended game from Friday versus Plattsburgh after the Oneonta game. Brockport won 2-1 to clinch the second seed for the SUNYAC tournament.

Brockport scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead. Sophomore Tom Hand (Wallkill/Pine Bush) came into the game for Oneonta (20-15) when starter Jeffrey Carter (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) left the game due to an injury. Hand threw four innings allowing three runs and four hits.

Freshman Kyle Tracy reached on an infield single with two out to get things started for Brockport (24-10). Junior Mike DeGregory reach on an error by Michael DeCarr (Syracuse/Westhill) and then Tom McCormick walked to load the bases. Senior Mike Goldstein singled through the right side to drive in Tracy and McCormick with the game's first runs.

With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Oneonta managed to score a run to cut the lead to 2-1. Senior Mike Arcuri singled, but pulled up rounding first base and was pinch run for by freshman Matthew Cintorino (Holbrook/Sachem East). Cintorino went to second when classmate Jake Robinson (East Norwich/Oyster Bay) was walked then scored on a Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane) single. Knack finished the game with three hits.

Oneonta tied the game for the first time in the home half of the third inning. DeCarr doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning. He went to third on a ground out by Mike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill) and scored on a ground out to shortstop by Pete Lindner (Voorheesville/Voorheesville).

Brockport regained the lead in the top of the eighth when Jake Coleman scored from third on a bases loaded walk. Coleman led off the inning with a bunt single down the third base line. Coleman earned his second save of the season after pitching a scoreless 14th inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Oneonta High graduate Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta/Oneonta) hit a two-out single to knock in DeCarr from second base to tie the game at four runs apiece. DeCarr led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second base by junior Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack).

The two teams remained deadlocked until the top of the 12th inning when Brockport scored a single run to take the lead 5-4. A two-out single by senior Max Zimmerman drove in Goldstein from second base.

Oneonta would not quit in the bottom of the inning as they tied the score for a third time. Another two-out single, this time by DeCarr, drove in Robinson from third base. Robinson was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second by Knack before getting to third on a ground out to second base by Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).

Brockport's winning run came with two outs in the 14th on a Mike Weakley single through the left side that drove in Max Keado from second base. Keado led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a single by Corey Booth.
