La Plume, PA—The SUNY Oneonta baseball team made three early runs stand up today, as the Red Dragons slipped by Keystone College 3-2 in non-conference baseball action. With the victory Oneonta moves to 18-8 overall, while Keystone falls to 17-9.
The story of this 2011 season for Oneonta has been its pitching and today it was no different as three pitchers combined to hold a potent Giants offense at bay. Oneonta starter,
Jeffrey Carter (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), worked five innings to pick up the win for the Red Dragons. Carter allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four.
Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) worked the ninth, striking out two, in picking up the save. Junior
Christopher Smith (Colonie/Colonie) threw three scoreless innings to get to Tyson in the ninth.
The Red Dragons pushed across a single run in the second and two more in the third and made them hold up as the Giants tried to chip away at the lead.
Oneonta's first run came via the long ball when sophomore
Mike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill) homered to right in the second. They extended the lead to 3-0 the following inning when they strung together RBI singles by
Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta/Oneonta) and Mascari. Mascari finished the game with a pair of hits and two RBIs.
The Giants attempted to inch back into things with a run in the fourth on a Gabe Torres RBI ground out. They would add another in the fifth on an Esteban Meletiche home run to left.
Rob Rogers went six and a third in defeat for the Giants. Rogers allowed one earned run on eight hits while also striking out eight.
Today's game for the Red Dragons was the first of nine games in a seven-day stretch that will end next Saturday at Cortland. Oneonta will be at Montclair State tomorrow for a single nine-inning game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
