Baseball wins thriller versus Fredonia 5-4

Red Dragons sweep season series from Blue Devils

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta baseball team trailed by a run entering the bottom of the ninth inning today before plating a pair to defeat visiting Fredonia 5-4 in SUNYAC action. With the win, Oneonta (8-6, 3-0) sweeps the regular season series from the Blue Devils after having won both games of a twin bill yesterday.

The bottom of the ninth began with a infield single by senior Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta, Oneonta), who hustled down the line to beat the throw from the shortstop. Junior Matthew Whelehan (Brooklyn, Midwood) then sacrificed Wolfanger to second to put him in scoring position. The next batter, junior Michael Center (Schenectady, Schenectady), singled through the right side just by the dive of the first baseman to score Wolfanger, who slid in to beat the throw.

Junior Kevin Knack (Ghent , Ichabod Crane) then squared around to bunt to move Center to second base, but he legged out a single as he beat the throw from a charging third baseman. Center scored the game winning run on a single to center field by sophomore Michael DeCarr (Syracuse, Westhill).

DeCarr drove in the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning today on a ground out to the shortstop, which drove in Knack, who tripled to the wall in right-center field.

Fredonia (8-6/0-3) tied the game at one apiece in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single to center field by Dillon Lowe. He drove in Taylor Gahagan, who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.

Knack doubled to centerfield to start the sixth inning for Oneonta. Two batters later he came around to score on a bloop single over the first baseman's head by sophomore Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park, Shenendehowa).

Fredonia struck for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Brian Sheehan was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second on a ground out to third by Dan Greco. Jon Messina worked a walk and both he and pinch runner Tommy Tantillo advanced up one base on a passed ball. Tantillo scored on a fielder's choice by Tom Dee as Messina was put out at third.

An infield single by Gahagan kept the inning alive for the Blue Devils. Lowe singled to center field to drive in Dee from second base for Fredonia second run. Gahagan came around to score on an RBI single by Jake Nowak to left-center field.

The Red Dragons cut the lead to a single run with a run in the home half of the eighth inning thanks to an error by the Fredonia second baseman, which allowed Marotta to score from third base.

Wolfanger and Knack both had three hits to lead the offense.  Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) pitched 1-1/3 innings allowing only one hit to pick up his first win of the season.  Starter Anthony Bates (Utica/Proctor) pitched six innings and allowed one run and two hits while striking out seven batters.

Oneonta is scheduled to play at Oswego this weekend for a three-game series beginning on Saturday. Saturday is a scheduled doubleheader beginning at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
