Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball finishes Florida trip 4-6 overall

Red Dragons play Montclair in first game up north

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta baseball team completed its spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla. this past Thursday with a 12-inning, 6-4 loss to Amherst College. The Red Dragons return north with an overall record of 4-6 and are scheduled to be at Montclair State this coming Tuesday for a single 9-inning contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.

In their last four games of the trip, Oneonta managed a doubleheader split with Messiah while falling to Keene State and Amherst. Against Messiah, the Red Dragons let a 5-1 lead slip away in game one of the twin bill as they fell 7-6. In game two, Oneonta assaulted Falcon pitching en route to a 16-2 victory.

The Keene State game was a rematch of last spring's NCAA regional contest where Oneonta eliminated the Owls from the NCAA tournament. This time Keene got the better of Oneonta in a 6-2 win.

For the trip, it was junior Kevin Knack (Ghent , Ichabod Crane) and sophomore Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) (Clifton Park, Shenendehowa) that led the offense, hitting .371 and .344 respectively. Marotta had the team's lone home run during the trip and drove in a team high seven runs. Knack led the team with 13 hits and had a pair of doubles and one of the seven triples that the Red Dragons had on the trip.

A pair of juniors and a rookie led the pitching staff. The duo of Joshua Herzenberg (White Plains/White Plains) (White Plains, White Plains) and Jeffrey Carter (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) (Clifton Park, Shenendehowa) both pitched well in their two starts in Florida. Freshman Jake Robinson (East Norwich/Oyster Bay) (East Norwich, Oyster Bay) was solid out of the bullpen in his first collegiate action.  Herzenberg pitched a complete-game in his first start of the season, a 3-1 win against UMass Boston, who went to the College World Series last year. In his second start, he got a no decision after 7-1/3 innings versus Amherst. Herzenberg finished the trip 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA with 14 strikeouts.

Carter, who went 1-0, struck out six batters in his 11 innings in his two starts and had a team low 1.59 ERA. Robinson made three appearances in relief, struck out eight hitters in 10 innings of work, and had a 1.80 ERA.
